Well according to the USA expert on World Football Phone in on 5 live, it is very unlikely to happen.
He says the strategy of signing older players by the league has moved on now.

Sounds like City have realised that it will cost them money to get rid of the player anyway;
- So pay him off the rest of his contract and let him go for nothing (Not even City are that stupid).
- Sell him (but who can afford to match the crazy contract City gave him) why would he accept a pay drop when he has a contract?
- Pay a percentage of his wage (spurs pushing to pay 80k-Wk); hope it leads to a sale.
This could be a good deal for us(trust Levy)

Espn and alot of websites are reporting we have signed adebayor on loan for a season if this is true id be happy cause he can do a job for us id take any striker at this stage id even take back klinsmann at this stage lol,the adebayor transfer tho seems likely to be true i tink its strange for espn ta say it,deres no smoke without a fire

2 the abusive poster above, if u check out news now tottenham there all lots of reports saying he has or is close to signing including espn.I personally doubt it, but it is there.

Can't see this happening, especially after pre season, he is again showing his true potential as a poacher and he has found his touch again. The striker off to Stoke will if any be String Bean Crouch.
I can see only Keane and Crouch as (strikers) leaving this window. Crouch sold and Keano on loan..(Due to Wages).

The Guardian website is reporting that we are about to take possession of a certain Togolese striker, a Mr Adebayor.... According to the report, Man City have agreed to pay £100k of his £175k weekly wage More fool them, but more fool us in taking on that useless waste of space if the report is true Get Mertesacker in at the back for about £10m and Mata as an attacking midfielder. The need for a striker is not as bad as everyone thinks - remember how long Defoe was out injured last year? I think they come good, although the 4-4-2 is better than the vDv-inspired 4-5-1 formation. C'mon the Spurs

People have such a downer on adebayor and i can't understand it. Out of our realistic targets he is by far the best option. A very good goalscorer, proven to be succesful in the premier leauge, and with our midfiled, the best he will have played with in the premiership feeding him he will flourish. Think of how many headers he will score with bale, lennon, vdv feeding him. Could net 25 this season and get us 4th or or even 3rd. I for one pray that we get him

Personally I think the deal you mention for Adebayor would be excellent.
If you saw him last season playing for Madrid you would have a different opinion.
Mata isnt going to come to Spurs he is at a club of our size in Spain with fair chance of CL on a regular basis.
He will only move to a top 2/3 club probably in Spain or maybe PL.
The Arse will try and sign him if Fabregas goes for example.
