another poor performance. how many more bad buys can the club make. ben davies looks like a championship player, stambouli does nothing and fazio loves the red cards.

It raises the question does the manager have a say on transfers or is he another victim of the get what your given policy at Spurs. He wanted Mussachio and was given Fazio, he wanted Schniederlin and was given Stambouli. What's Mopo to do, until the manager is allowed full control of incoming and out going transfers we will always have lots of rubbish players, he can't be blamed for that. Turning down 15 mil for Townsend was a terrible error on Levys part.

Is it me or do we have a problem we pass the ball sideways then kick it back to the goalie, it was like groundhog day, no width another iffy performance, Townsend one cross one penalty and now he is a world beater . Lady luck was with us tonight and again a win, hides our frailties and weaknesses . Would like to see dier at center back strambouli needs more games not bad in the middle . Kane deserves place ist team . Fazio one of mopos players, hope this is a lie with January coming

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don't think winning hid anything, that performance if repeated will see us get spanked regularly and MoPo knows it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Eds, I thought Fazio's red card was harsh . He is getting a good going over on this site at the mo, do you think that's fair . I know he has picked up two reds already but he must be finding it difficult adjusting to the speed of the premier league compared to la liga!! In fact he isn't getting much of a chance with Mopo's stupid insistence of changing up to ten players each game . He keeps on about playing his way and his tactics, how are they supposed to adjust to this when there is no consistency to the team . Surely the back four should play together for a run of games, this is more important than sorting out a new CF . The same thought could be applied to Davies, chopped and changed about all the time . Is Mopo the only person who can't see exactly how bad Rose is?
It seems we sign players with good reputations or promise, only to see them played out of position, not played or pissed about every week . All these different players are mentioned that we would like, but who would want to come to the lane at present unless they were a mercenary like Ade? I laugh when the talk is about us buying someone English, Baldini doesn't look at a player unless he gets a free holiday out of it! Shouldn't think he even knows where WBA play!
I know we are only a few points away from a CL PLACE BUT CAN ANY ONE ON THIS SITE SEE US DOING IT?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - I think Fazio just needs time myself. Back fours need to be kept consistent to grow together and develop a partnership. Even a rotation oriented manager like Rafa Benitez kept the back four as consistent as possible.}

If we are going to play a high line defense then lack of pace in any of the back line will get exploited as we have witnessed several times already over the last couple of seasons.

Not suggesting Fazio is a bad player any more than I think Soldado is, just the wrong player for MoPo's philosophy.

With Rose being rubbish for us one would think that Ben Davies would see it as a chance to take the left back spot especially after he has been moaning this week that he is frustrated at not playing and yet when he does play he is very poor.

Kane is the only positive soo far tonight. Our play is abject, no obvious tactics, no compactness, no passion and we have been opened up time after time against the equivalent of a 2nd division team. Its very embarrassing to watch.

Vorm for man of the match anyone . yes it was that bad again. How we won that one is beyond me.

Just for the record, I wasn't carried away by that spending spree last year, as my posts at the time will confirm.

I thought £17m for Paulinho was reasonable for a 24-year-old Brazilian international that had just played every game in the Federations Cup, but I was worried that he was too much like Dembele, but not as good.

I was also dubious about Soldado. He had a good record in Spain, but was completely untried here and was older than I would have liked. I thought he was worth a punt at our initial offer of £17m, but that was as high as we should have gone.

It was the same with Lamela. He was just a promising young player (like Erikson), but for £26m we should have been getting a proven world class star.

However, we did pay all that money, so we have to give these players a chance. I haven't quite given up on any of them yet, but I won't be surprised if they are all moved on quite quickly, probably for a total loss of £30m to £40m.

The fact we are discussing this at all just underlines a point I have often tried to make. Our failure to secure Champions league football in recent years has had very little to do with Levy's reluctance to spend money.

For example, in Harry's final season, we finished 4th. but that wasn't enough to qualify for the Champions League. However, we could easily have finished 3rd.

At the time, people said that if Levy had just got his chequebook out and brought in another couple of top class players it would have made all the difference. Then one good Champions League run would have immediately recouped that investment. It sounds plausible, but isn't true.

Last year, with the Bale deal lined up, we broke our transfer record three times. If those three players had been available to Harry it wouldn't have helped at all, because on current form they wouldn't have been picked much and wouldn't have added anything when they were.

Levy could have spent an additional £69m, on apparently good players, with no positive effect. In fact, trying to accommodate those expensive acquisitions would probably have disrupted the squad and made things worse.

Bringing in the right players always makes a difference, but the right players can be anything.

They might be expensive (for us) players on the point of emerging as world class (like Berbatov or Modric), cheap veterans with one more good season left in them (like Parker), medium-priced young prospects (like Erikson), or even home-grown talent (like Mason, Bentaleb or Kane).

Of course, money is a crucial factor in the long run, but that is a different issue.

Most fans on here were thrilled with the signings, we didn't expect them to flop they were desirable players.

When Redknapp was there we were a striker (Suarez) away from challenging for the title imo.

That Fazio is a donkey, get rid.

I think Fazio has more red cards than tackles now.

In the box he is ok but when he gets turned, which ain't that hard, he is painful to watch. He will get sent off alot. This is one player we should sell deary me. He makes Mertesacker looklike a gymnast.

Agree0 Disagree0

Which of course makes him perfect for a high line defense - I don't think.

Our defence is worrying, they are all over the place most games. No consistent pairings although we have had injuries.

Vertonghen and Dier is the cb two for me with Walker and Rose/Davies there both terrible at the moment. When Kaboul is fit does it make sense to have the new captain on the bench. That's where he should be though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Which begs the question why buy Fazio, he doesn't fit the playing style of MoPo as best I can determine or any style we have deployed in the last 3 years. Who is making these decisions?

We tried getting Mussachio first so Fazio was 2nd choice at best. Like Yellow card says when you play a high line you need fast cbs and Fazio is not that.

Agree0 Disagree0

But what is the point of buying your second or third choice or whatever if they will not now or ever have the pace to play a high back line if that is the team philosophy.

Exactly yellow card there is no point, he will never speed up.
