I feel probably the biggest reason we haven't been a big attacking threat this season is because of our wingers, Townsend and Siggy.

AVB tends to play them on opposite flanks, in order for them to cut in onto their strong foot. This basically cancels out natural wing play, delivering crosses into the box etc. Soldado/Defoe have nothing to food on if these wingers keep on cutting into midfield, creating a much smaller space to play in, thus limiting the space Eriksen/Holtby have to make plays.

Just my thought. Does anyone else agree/disagree?

Agree with you but should be down to the players to see it isn't working and at times switch flanks like we did a lot last season. Hopefully AVB starts getting more width out of our team because like you said we do lack width and seem 1 dimensional

Was at the game last night, as I am for most home games. The atmosphere was very good last night.

I thought the team performance was ok and we got the win. The only grumbles I have are that for all the posession we have, we don't create enough, which is worrying because in my opinion we have more and better creative players now than we have had for a long time, which brings me on to my next grumble which is, is AVB playing the wrong formation for the players. We his 4-2-3-1 formation there is no width, so when teams come to WHL and play a bank of 5 and a bank of 4 in packs the middle of the park and we have no width to attack down the sides and IMO we play our best football down the wings.

All that said though, this IS our best start to a season in a fair while and if it continues and we start playing like we all hope we can, it should be a productive season . They say the making if a good team is playing badly and still winning which is what we are doing. So I for will still be at the lane each week screaming my lungs out and cheering the lads on.

I agree, I thought last night the game was screaming for either townsend or lennon to come on and give us the width we lacked. I thought the football in the last third looked at times like it was starting to gell a bit more until defoe got involved and trod on the ball etc. I don't think avb has the right chemistry yet but i'm sure it will happen and as you best start to the premiere with hopefully more to come. thought lamela looked stronger last night and a great free kick but poor penalty. I really hope he makes it because he could be one of our best. well done avb for thanking the crowd what a difference it makes and should show all the people on here that he was right to comment on the crowd and what a difference they can make. keep going boys coys

The atmosphere was great last night, the shelf boys were in top form, and it was great to see us win on penalties. But the performance itself.

I feel that for the possession we are having in our games, we are just not creating enough chances, the final ball last night so many times was just simply not good enough and we seemed in many positions where a shot could've been taken on but they tried to force the pass and lost possession.

Lamela looked lively throughout the game, his touch looked phenomenal and great to see him take on a few players. But could see some of the boys, Walker particularly, losing his temper with him, obviously the language barrier is effecting him.

But onwards and upwards, West Ham at home and we certainly owe them a pasting

{Ed008's Note - AVB himself knows he has a problem doesn't know his starting 11 some of the new signings haven't settled like Lamela/Eriksen/Soldado and teams are going to WHL to sit back and defend the pitch is a problem when teams play that way less space to create I think he needs to play 2 out and out wingers who will run at defenders it doesn't work Sigurdsson left midfield. For me Lamela needs a run of games on the right side and Townsend left side.

He definitely doesn't know, I think he had an idea but it's not working out the way he had visioned.

Soldado will struggle as the lone man without getting the service he requires, wingers beating there man and good cut backs, Lennon and Walker would be perfect for this if the end product improved.

Dembele and Paulinho are excellent, but don't possess that creative edge to slip balls through, Eriksen and Holtby will be key this season as well as Lamela, Townsend and Lennon if it is going to be a success.

Ed, you hit it right on the nail! We have one of the smallest pitches in the PL anyway and playing the wingers on the wrong side is making it even narrower! Our wingers have to start doing what they are in the team for, going past players and getting in the cross! Unfortunately, with Townsend this isn't going to happen as he is worried about losing his place, so he always looks to come inside to shoot . Basically he has become a younger, taller Defoe, with his only policy being to shoot on sight! Yes, this is ok some of the time but the way we are playing at present, why bother with a CF, he isn't getting any service . In fact why play Erikson in the hole either as he doesn't have any space to move!

AVB may well finish 4th, he might one day win us a trophy, his time in charge could be a success but it ain't going to be exciting viewing. Slow possession football is ok when you're 2 or 3 up but when we're only 1 up we're just 1 mistake away from trouble as we saw last night! For all the control we had we didn't open them up much at all.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

In fairness they did have 11 men behind the ball at all times

We are stumbling over the line. I can see a west ham result coming alone very soon, maybe ever worse. What if our players dnt improve or this is the best avb can do with them. By falling over the line we are just papering over the cracks. 2 stupid comments came out this week (avb Crowed) dumbele small pitch) is the reason we are not flowing at home. Me I think the system is so badly wrong. Why does he play the natural wingers on the other side . The other team parks the bus at the lane it's full up in the middle and our wingers are also cutting in. The other is yyyyyyyyyyyyyy only one striker at home to lower teams. I'm fact we have 4 good strikers why only play 1.
