Please correct me if I'm wrong
Ts was our under 21 coach.
So he knows all our kids and only brought in his step son.
So my question is he has been grooming the kids and getting them ready for the 1st team. Now me is our manager I'm surprise in the lack of addition specially in the full back rolls as we are desperate

Directors of Football

(this one will run and run)

I think that as AVB came under pressure he was probably preparing his excuses in advance. That meant leaking to journalists. When he was questioned about transfers after the Liverpool game, that didn't seem like someone just flying a kite and AVB's guarded response seemed too well rehearsed.

I can only report rumours I have heard over the years. Mostly I cannot trace those rumours to a source. However, there has been a consistent trend.

First, I heard that Hoddle felt he was being undermined by David Pleat, who continually rubbished his man management, team selection and tactics to the Board. Eventually he got the bullet and Pleat took over for the rest of the season (without covering himself in glory).

Santini joined with a good track record but soon felt uncomfortable about the role of Arnesen. He was supposedly furious when Carrick was bought without his authorization and resigned about 12 games into the season.

Jol seemed happy to work with Arnesen, but when Commoli took over he too started to worry about being given players he didn't want. Two 5th place finishes didn't help his cause and the breaking point supposedly came when he advised the Board to sell Berbatov. He was overruled and the club was soon sounding out Ramos as his replacement.

Ramos conducted a massive clear-out of the squad but none of the replacements were his choice. The wheels fell off.

Clearly, Harry made the departure of Commoli a condition of his taking charge. However, this didn't mean he was allowed to run riot with a cheque book. He spent heavily in January 2009 in order to dig Spurs out of a hole, but his spending was tightly controlled after that. He spent a further £58m but recouped £67m in sales.

That financial discipline did not require the interference of a Director of Football.

When AVB took over I immediately heard he was unhappy at the signing of Lloris. That turned out to be a great buy, but he felt he had higher priorities than a new goalkeeper.

The issue was not about whether AVB's judgement was good, or whether he was being realistic in the players he wanted. It was about authority levels. Who could approve the players that had an immediate impact on the first team pool?

For me, that shouldn't be a Director of Football, because he doesn't carry the can if things go wrong in the Dressing Room and on the pitch.

Stanley Baldwin had something to say about that:

"Power without responsibility: the prerogative of the harlot throughout the ages."

{Ed008's Note - AVB unhappy with Lloris? He wanted a new Goalkeeper No1 Priority!

Hi Ed008, Brad Friedel said when he signed his 2yr deal with Spurs he knew there was a plan to find a successor which would probably limit his playing time in year 2. Not sure if it was AVB's priority or not but it was definitely the club's plan all along.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed008's Note - Exactly!

Lloris for me felt like a perfect AVB player. If you want to play a high line (as AVB clearly did) then you need a keeper that will sweep up long balls being played through. Effectively if your keeper can control an extra 10m ahead of him then your line can play an extra 10m higher (ish) as the gap is the same (ish).

So Lloris had the style that suited AVB's system, was a high profile and well regarded international player, and I think it was a coup that we attracted him when several other large clubs were hunting for a new goalkeeper. This is another "AVB didn't have the players he wanted" rumour that I just don't buy into.

Agree0 Disagree0

I only report what I heard at the time. Whether it was true or not I cannot say.

However, AVB was noticeably slow to introduce Lloris into his first team. He only made about 3 appearances in our first 15 games and it wasn't until well into November that he became established as first choice for the big games.

Given Friedel's age, it might seem that a goalkeeper was a top priority but we still had Cudicini and Gomes (who had been first choice during two of our best seasons).

It may be AVB wanted to take the cream of his Porto team with him to WHL and that was what he wanted money spent on.

Agree0 Disagree0

In case I haven’t made myself clear:

I think the editor is wrong in claiming that a goalkeeper was a top priority for AVB.

Our 1st choice keeper had turned 40, so that seems a reasonable assumption, but it only adds credibility to the rumour I heard. Why claim something that most people would reject as unlikely, if there was nothing to it?

This is the scenario I find most credible:

AVB said he was happy with his goalkeepers for the time being, so he wasn’t too pleased when Lloris was signed anyway.

When people said how good Lloris was, he replied: “OK, let him prove it.”

He pointedly continued to pick Friedel as his 1st choice keeper and even gave Cudicini an outing.

However, after watching Lloris’s progress over the next 10 weeks, he came to realise that he really was good.

What’s more, he was the right keeper for his system (for the reasons that Wulf gave).

Lloris became his 1st choice.

It all blew over.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed008's Note - Yeah but how many managers lie in press conferences? Friedel had started really well the first couple of months and until he lost form or Lloris proved to AVB he was certainly better he wasn't going to drop him..

Avb wanted a 'sweeper' type goalkeeper and that's exactly what Lloris is. He didn't play at first simply to help him settle in.

Ed's can I please ask why my reply to valley has been removed? I didn't feel I was rude or abusive in any way and was interested in his response. If you could let me know what was wrong with it it'll help me understand what's appropriate or not.
Thanks.

{Ed008's Note - I cannot see how your post was removed or if another Ed deleted the post I dealt with the majority Spurs post yesterday I remember posting your conversation, feel free to post again until I find out what's happened..

Haha yeah would ed but it was a very long reply and cannot remember it. No problem, cheers for the reply.

Think we should start giving ryan frericks and alex Pritchard a run out because I can't see them doing any worse than others. Cup games next season and Europa if we make that. Coulibaly and coulthisrt should be given a run out too. Youth policy at everton and Southampton are working well we need to do the same.

Looking back at this very early stage of ts managing career I think he has or is starting to loose the dressing room. The players are not turning up nor has he got a clue what to do.
He is starting to hide away in the directors area for game when he should be on the touch line barking out orders. When asked why he is up there he replied. I can see a lot better and it's part of my learning curve blar blar blar.
When asked has the team responded to your recent out bursts he replied, doesn't look like it does it.
Not convincing works from a man that is running the club on the field or a man who looks to be our manager next year.
I think he should quit now for the interest of all concerned as it's not working

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agreed. The players look confused. Just play people in their correct positions for a start.

If I could ask Sherwood any question it would be where does he see our goals coming from; like what is his plan?

Maybe if the Chairman of the Board did nt go around hawking the managers job all over Europe then everyone would take Tim Sherwood seriously. Honestly what sort of CEO appoints a guy on 18 month Contract then immediately undermines him by offering the job to several other people?

Sorry Mr Levy but the time has come for you to step down, this is your mess. You should not have let Modric or Bale leave the club. AVB was the wrong man for the job, A chelsea Reject? Thanks for that.

I don't want another useless foreign coach like Ramos, Gross, Santini etc etc, they are all the same.

So COYS stop moaning and get behind the Manager and the players and fight for some pride. We make ourselves look the most disloyal group of Fans in the Premiership. Some of you are a total disgrace

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Fair points but I believe Levy spoke with lvg before he appointed Sherwood and as for bale and modric they were determined to leave so we did the best to get the most for them. However how we spent and who we spent that money on is the real question. A better manager would have spent wiser and not let levy and baldini dictate signings. Time to get in top notch man and sign only players he wants.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ant, It doesn't matter who your manager is, if your DoF and Chairman want to decide the signings then they will, after all they're the ones who sign the cheque book.

Agree0 Disagree0

The day we have a manager, wether foreign or English or whatever, that actually knows what he is doing, or has some sort of plan, then I should think he will get the backing of all the Spurs fans! The fact of the matter is, once again DL has f****d us over, dumped on us a nice bloke who as a manager is not up to the job . Apart from Rogers, name one decent manager in the PL, who is in charge of a decent team, you can't . The sad truth is, we don't produce them .
So while TS is completely destroying my team with useless tactics, useless substitutions, and stupid comments I will voice my opinions on this site rather than at the ground . It costs a lot of money each year for a season ticket to support my team, so when angry, opinions get said!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry, I meant decent English manager before I get slaughtered!

Agree0 Disagree0

Rodgers is N.Irish not English.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh well that really proves my point doesn't it! Fact we have to face is, there isn't a first class English manager to be had, and please don't say Hodgson!
