Like everybody else on this site, I have always assumed that Sherwood was just a stop-gap to the end of the season, so there isn't much point asking whether his record justifies giving him another chance. I only raise this issue because recent posts have been so hostile to him.

The facts suggest he has done an OK job and there has actually been a slight improvement since he took over.

In AVB's 16 games in charge we scored just 0.9 goals a game. In Sherwood's 20 this has doubled to 1.8.

Under AVB we conceded 1.3 goals a game and under Sherwood it is virtually the same at 1.4.

Under AVB we picked up 1.68 points a game and under Sherwood it has been 1.95.

There has been no striking improvement and no striking deterioration, but our record is marginally better under him.

Sherwood has had the benefit of Erikson's improvement (he was still settling in when AVB was in charge), but he also took the crucial decision to bring back Adebayor. The major downside is that Lamela and Capoue have both been almost permanently injured since he took over, so we still have no idea what they might be able to contribute.

If I look at all AVB's 54 league games, the record is 1.4 goals per game scored, 1.2 conceded and 1.7 points a game. Under AVB we were slightly stronger defensively, but slightly less effective overall, than under Sherwood.

I am not saying this means we should stick with Sherwood, I am just pointing out that he hasn't done too badly for somebody who is supposed to be tactically inept and a terrible man-manger.

You said it yourself that avb's and tims record are virtually the same and avb got sacked for that record.
Bye bye Timmy!

Totally agree, bye bye!

KM, the difference is that like I previously have posted, managers seem to always bring in an upturn in results when they first take over a club but over a period of a year then you see what a manager can achieve.
I believe this is exactly what happend with TS. The first 5 games or something he got good results after that the results have been pretty much what you'd expect.
I still think had AVB stayed for the whole season then we'd have the same if not more points as I do believe he is a better manager just was left with the task of getting to many players to 'gel' in a short period of time. But that's just my opinion and something we will never know.

Stats are stats and they can be misleading, I like Sherwood as a person and I like that he says what others avoid, my issue was that we rushed into his appointment and took a gamble when we should have had a longer term strategy.
whilst I say the above the worry is we have no system, no style, no settled team and no leaders so what we need is someone who can take our talent and give it some structure and shape, make them believe, move the ball faster and not conceed in the first ten minutes, who that is we will have to wait and see and it has in my opinion got to be someone who has done it before in the prem (not Moyes) so for me it's raffia the gaffa 1st choice failing that the Southampton manager But not his negotiator as that would drive us all mad

We are waiting for De Boer. Apparently Poccechtino can speak good English, but chooses to have an interpreter when speaking to the media.

Spurs 1985 and Norfolkspur

I realise that statistics can be misleading, especially when they cover such a small time period, but where possible I prefer to give statistics (with an appropriate health warning) rather than entirely unsupported opinions.

At 1985's suggestion, I have discounted Sherwood’s first 4 games to get an exact comparison with AVB’s 16 and to minimise the ‘new manager’ effect.

Under AVB we scored just 15 goals (including 4 penalties) and under Sherwood it has been 27 (no penalties). We conceded 21 goals under AVB and 24 under Sherwood. We got 27 points under AVB and 29 under Sherwood.

In other words, the comparison is between the two records is roughly the same even when the new manager effect is discounted.

I do agree that AVB should not have been sacked. There was no crisis and appointing a caretaker was not the way to secure Champion’s League football.

I think this supports the rumour of problems behind the scenes between AVB on the one hand and Baldini and Levy on the other.

I suspect that AVB felt under additional pressure to deliver a top four finish, because we had spent £100m in the summer, but from his perspective much of that money had been spent on players he hadn’t asked for and didn’t really want.

I think Lamela might have been a major bone of contention. With add-on clauses he was our most expensive ever player. He was clearly bought on the recommendation of Baldini. AVB looked at him in training and decided he wasn’t ready for the Premiership and the Board became increasingly uncomfortable that he seemed to be wasting the club’s most expensive asset.

Meanwhile, AVB did pick Soldado every week, despite his poor form. He was supposedly an AVB choice (Levy preferred to spend £25m on the much younger Benteke) and this raised further doubts about whether AVB’s decisions were being made on footballing grounds or were simply a battle of wills with Baldini.

These are just rumours and my speculations based on them. I know that Wulf, in particular, is sceptical about their accuracy, but I do think the sudden sacking of AVB gives them some substance.

It is impossible to say what would have happened if AVB had stayed but I doubt if it would have been an improvement on what we have actually seen.
